IPL treatment for dry eye

This dry eyes treatment is currently available at Black Gates Optometrists Lower Hutt practice.

Dry eye syndrome is a common eye health condition which effects roughly 20% of the population. Conditions of a modern lifestyle can make symptoms of dry eye even worse. Working on computer screens, artificial lighting, air conditioning, wearing contact lenses, and previous eye surgery can all add to the discomfort caused by dry eye.

Common Dry Eye Symptoms

  • Blurry vision
  • Scratchy or burning eyes
  • Red eyes
  • Frequent tearing
  • Sore or tired eyes

Generally speaking, dry eyes are the result of either insufficient tears or an excessive evaporation. It is recognised that a large majority of cases are caused by the evaporative form, commonly named Meibomian Gland Dysfunction (MGD). If you experience any of the above, you may be suffering from some degree of dry eye syndrome

Dry Eye Treatments

Until recently solutions for dry eye sufferers have been limited to ointments, hot compresses and eye drops for dry eyes. Advances in dry eye treatment have seen the development of Intense Pulsed Light (IPL) therapy. An “in office” treatment that stimulates the meibomian glands from within, helping them return to their normal function. While there is no “cure” for dry eye his is a very useful addition to the traditional home regimens and can significantly improve symptoms.

IPL Treatment

IPL treatment is simple & painless procedure. It can provide immediate relief for some dry eye sufferers. The IPL device generates a polychromatic pulsed light by producing perfectly sequenced light pulses. A series of flashes are delivered under the lower eyelids which helps the meibomian glands get back to their normal tear producing function as well as reducing inflammation.  The light also gently heats the glands to liquefy any obstructing secretions and the glands are able to be expressed after IPL to clear any obstructions, instantly improving tear flow.

The IPL device is medically certified

Each session only takes a few minutes, and results are cumulative. It is recommended that most people will need around 4 sessions to see optimum results, and then a maintenance session once a year. Some patients might find they need more sessions, while others need fewer. We recommend coming in to see one of our optometrists to find out what would be right for you.

Most people report 90% satisfaction rate after the first two treatments!
